Status of the Fundamental Laws of Thermodynamics

We describe recent progress towards deriving the Fundamental Laws of thermodynamics (the 0, 1, and 2 Law) from nonequilibrium quantum statistical mechanics in simple, yet physically relevant models. Along the way, we clarify some basic thermodynamic notions and discuss various reversible and irreversible thermodynamic processes from the point of view of quantum statistical mechanics.

About the Carathéodory Number

In this paper we give sufficient conditions for a compactum in R to have Carathéodory number less than n+ 1, generalizing an old result of Fenchel. Then we prove the corresponding versions of the colorful Carathéodory theorem and give a Tverberg-type theorem for families of convex compacta.

Stochastic control and non-equilibrium thermodynamics: fundamental limits

We consider damped stochastic systems in a controlled (time-varying) quadratic potential and study their transition between specified Gibbs-equilibria states in finite time. By the second law of thermodynamics, the minimum amount of work needed to transition from one equilibrium state to another is the difference between the Helmholtz free energy of the two states and can only be achieved by a ...

New Fundamental Concepts and Results in Thermodynamics with Chemical Applications

A thermodynamics of open systems has been developed which provides an entirely new theoretical framework based on novel concepts without any recourse to statistical mechanics, The standard chemical potential is replaced by a convective potential itself derived from a new concept referred to as the “thermobaric potential”. Entropy convected by addition of masses into an open system is obtained u...

On the Integral Carathéodory Property

In this note we document the existence of a finitely generated rational cone that is not covered by its unimodular Hilbert subcones, but satisfies the integral Carathéodory property. We explain the algorithms that decide these properties and describe our experimental approach that led to the discovery of the examples.
